Berkeley Marimba

In the Spring of 2013, Mr. Brent traveled to Berkeley Elementary School in Spotsylvania County, Virgina to help music teacher, Melanie Bolas, and her students build an Aussie Marimba. This is a 3 1/2 octave instrument equivalent to a Soprano + Alto + Bass Orff xylophone.

Lee Hill Marimbas

In late October 2011, the students and teachers of Lee Hill Elementary School in Spotsylvania County, Virginia gathered to make two new marimbas for the school music program, led by Daniel Radford, the music teacher, and Brent Holl, consultant. After four days of hard work and fun, an Aussie (3 1/2 octave, tube resonated) and a (2 octave) Bass Marimba were complete and ready to play.

John Wayland Marimba

In January, 2012, the students at John Wayland Elementary School in Bridgewater, Virginia made themselves a new Bass Marimba. The two-day project was sponsored by the school's music and science departments.

Rural Retreat Marimba

Cub Run Marimba

October 15 and 16, 2012. Cub Run Elementary school under the guidence of music teacher Bridgette Sager, made a bass marimba for their music room.

Highland Park Marimbas

In late October 2012, Highland Park music teacher George Dickenson supervised the building of two new marimbas for his music program. With the help of marimba consultant, Brent Holl, a bass marimba and an Aussie marimba will be made with the help of the students at Highland Park.

Clymore Marimba

On April 9 and 10, 2013 the students along with music teacher, Joan Kenney, Mr. Holl and several adult helpers built a bass marimba to add to the music room instrumentarium.

Shen Fine is one of the "house" bands at Skyland Lodge on the Skyline Drive in the Shenandoah National Park in Virginia. We play in the Tap Room several times a month.

Wood Carving2791 viewsStudents are trained to use the simple hand tools, a plastic mallet and a wood chisel, to carve wood from the center third of the tone bar. As more wood is removed the pitch of the bar is lowered. Care must be taken not to take out too much wood!
