Melanie Kang grew up in the central area of China. She received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in music education from Xi’an Conservatory of Music and received her master’s in music from the School of Music, University of Utah. Melanie has dedicated her entire career to music education for children. She taught music in Xi’an, China, North Carolina, and California, and she has presented in conferences, workshops, and classes nationally and internationally.
A long-time practitioner of Orff Schulwerk, Melanie is a collector of Chinese folk songs and dances for elementary students. She has worked to make Chinese folk songs and dances more accessible to American teachers and students by incorporating the authentic elements of Chinese folk music with the Orff approach. The songs and activities collected in her new book, Lions, Lanterns, and Ribbons, have been classroom tested and loved by elementary children.
